“They’re big decals”

SPHERES © are graphic art by Portland, Oregon based artist/designer Matthew Haggett. These computer-designed pieces are vector art, meant for mechanical output. While they have been rendered in print and digitally, in ink (tattoo ink, that is), and silkscreen (see tee-shirts), SPHERES evolved out of Matthew’s use of cut vinyl in his graphics work and artwork in the mid 90's and are ultimately vinyl-inspired. On the wall (or window, or floor, or table), SPHERES have strong visual and conceptual interest, evoking their own unique senses of space, shape, and pattern.

SPHERELAB works in partnership with super-cool wall graphics company, SCRIBBLES, who produce and deliver thoroughly consumer-tested temporary wall SPHERES decals that a novice can install easily and remove easily, without causing damage, on most surfaces. Keep them for weeks, years, or never take them down. SCRIBBLES printed process allows a range of designer colors with a matte finish that looks like your art is painted on the wall. SPHERELAB also produces ever-popular BIG spheres from its terrestrial headquarters in Portland Oregon.

“They’re postmodern”

Matthew’s first public wall-vinyl installations were in the late 90’s at Studio 333 and Butters Gallery in Portland, Oregon. SPHERES were developed in 2000, first displayed as wall vinyl installation in Sepember 2001, first purchased for a permanent collection in 2004, distributed in partnership with BLIK from 2005 to 2009, and by SPHERELAB since 2006. SPHERES are ©Matthew Haggett, available through BLIK and their retailers nationwide, Butters Gallery in Portland, Oregon, as well as (obviously) through us here at SPHERELAB.

Formally and conceptually, there is a lot going on with SPHERES – especially with the SPHERELAB interface involving the ‘viewer’ in design and installation – but they’re also fun, retro-futuristic, eye-candy.
